Up in the air

The winds same winds that make Tyrol an ideal location for sailing, kite- und windsurfing also led to Tyrol being a top-destination for sail-planing, para- and hang-gliding. In addition to that you can also go hot-air ballooning, for a helicopter ride or sky diving.

Para- and hang-gliding – You’re allowed to hang- and paraglide almost everywhere in Tyrol. Of course some spots are more suited than other so we found a list for you to get the details about these. You can find it here. If you don’t have a licence yourself you can start a course in most places listed in the link above. Alternatively you can also join a professional in a tandem-flight. These start at around 90€ per flight in Stubai for example. Here is an overview regarding tandem-flights.

Sail-planing – There are multiple places from which you can start to learn how to sail-plane. The closest will likely be the Innsbruck Airport, home of the ISV (GER). Alternatively also check out the FZT (GER). If you prefer to simply join somebody who already knows what they’re doing we recommend you visit mountain-soaring. The cost for a trial flight starts at 395€ which will give you 90 Minutes around the mountains of Innsbruck. A list of options can be found here.

I was lucky enough to join one of the pilots a while back and although seeing the planes soar next to the mountains looks incredibly peaceful and tranquil make no mistake, they pack quite the punch. Especially launching via cable from the airport or deep diving is an incredible rush.

Hot-Air Ballooning – Although not seen that often it’s always great to spot a hot air balloon in the Tyrolean skies. Depending on wind condition there are various spots you can depart from. Prices start from 280€ per Person for about 90 minutes flight time. You can find further details here.

For even more ballooning action join the International Balloon Cup in Kirchberg. The best address for even more ballooning in Tyrol is ballooningtyrol.com (GER)

Helicopter flight – Another great way to take in the stunning landscape is via helicopter. These lift off in multiple location throughout tyrol and can be chartered from around 1.500€ per 5 passengers, so 300€ per person for a roughly 30 minute flight. You can book a tour here. More providers can be found here. Hell-Austria also sometimes hosts events around helicopter flying in Tyrol e.g. like the Heli Day.

Skydiving – Skydiving is a great experience that truly puts you out there (hehe). I am aware of two organisations in Tyrol that can help you out if you want to try it. For a tandem jump I recommend to go with Freddy in St. Johann (GER). Not only is he a very experienced skydiver, all-rund cool dude but, on the way up, he also tells you stuff about the surrounding areas and mountains – not that I remembered anything as I was scared shitless but hey, maybe your nerves are better than mine. For a tandem jump he charges 259€. The other organisation, which can also help you get your license (about 1.8k €), is skydive-tirol. Their jumpsite is in Eggenfelden in Bavaria and for a tandem jump they charge 209€.
