X-Mas Markets

The Christmas markets or ‘Christkindlmärkte’, as they are called in German, are at the heart of the Christmas feeling in Innsbruck. Their beauty and flair is known all over the world and Innsbruck’s markets consistently rank in the top 10 of Christmas markets worldwide.

The first markets to open, which are also the two biggest ones, are located in the old town and the Marktplatz. These open on the 15th of November. The one in the Marktplatz features a carousel, Swarovski’s stunning interpretation of a Christmas tree and lots of attractions for our younger guests while the Christmas Market in the old town is an attraction in its own right. With the golden roof as a backdrop and featuring a tree of around 18m in size it is the epicentre of Innsbrucks Christmas spirit.

Let the atmosphere grab you and enjoy treats like the local ‘Kiachl’, variations of mulled wine, specialties from all around the area and countless shopping possibilities. These Christmas markets are joined on the 25th of November by the cosy one in Wilten, the Hungerburg Christmas market with its stunning views and finally the Maria-Theresien-Street Christmas Market which features awe-inspiring works of art that use lights to create a perfect blend of charm and style.

From the 25th it’s almost impossible to not run into one of the markets but it is definitely worth checking them all out. Here’s a more detailed overview of the individual markets.

For the party-seekers among you preferring a very mulled-wine-centered experience we recommend the Fischer-Häusl – a venue conveniently located in the old town but somewhat off the beaten track. It’s easy to get to but you would have to know that it’s there. Not crowded with tourists and offering reasonable prices it established itself as a hotspot among students who will surely welcome you in their midst. Enjoy the party but beware – a mulled-wine hangover is not easily shaken off.
